Introduction

Embarking on this journey, our ultimate goal was to immerse ourselves in the awe-inspiring landscapes and explore the vibrant cities along the way. Traveling on our trusty BMW K1600GTL motorcycle, we knew we couldn’t possibly cover everything, but we were eager to uncover those hidden gems that demanded to be seen.

Riding through North America on our motorcycles brought a unique sense of freedom and connection to our surroundings. Exposed to the elements, we relished the 360-degree views that surrounded us most of the time, making us feel intimately connected to everything in sight. Mother Nature herself became our guide, as we could directly feel the temperature fluctuations, experience the touch of raindrops, and sense the mighty force of the winds. It was a visceral experience that made each day an extraordinary adventure.

While our route was somewhat planned, it served more as a loose framework than a rigid schedule. We kept our itineraries flexible, always open to new insights and recommendations from fellow travelers. Sometimes, these suggestions led us to extend our journey, venturing further than we initially intended. In this spontaneous manner, we found ourselves adding Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland to our itinerary at the last minute, embracing the unknown with excitement.

In Alberta, serendipity took the reins, presenting us with an unexpected opportunity. Learning that we could set foot in the legendary land of Alaska, we knew we couldn’t let this chance pass us by. Julia’s long-held dream of visiting Alaska suddenly became within reach, and without hesitation, we altered our plans to seize the moment. The decision to venture beyond our previously scheduled itinerary added an extra 4,000 miles to our already epic 10,000-mile journey, but the reward far surpassed the effort. It infused our adventure with spontaneity, making it all the more unforgettable.

This expedition on our BMW K1600GTL motorcycle wasn’t just about covering distances or ticking off landmarks; it was about embracing the spontaneity of the road, cherishing the experiences that arose along the way. The landscapes we witnessed and the cities we explored were just pieces of the larger puzzle. The true essence of our journey lay in the connections we forged with nature, the thrill of discovery, and the exhilaration of living life to the fullest. As we rode into the horizon, we knew we were creating memories that would stay with us forever.

Beyond the thrill of the ride and the stunning scenery, it was the people we encountered that truly left an indelible mark on our hearts. Visiting friends and family along the way added a sense of warmth and familiarity, reminding us of the precious connections we hold dear.

The K1600GTL carried us with grace and power, navigating the winding roads that led us through rolling plains, dense forests, and breathtaking canyons. We savored every twist and turn, immersing ourselves in the wonder of the world around us. With every passing mile, the landscapes shifted, mirroring the personal growth and transformation that accompanied our journey.

Preparing for the Journey

Every remarkable adventure begins with meticulous preparation, and our 57-day motorcycle tour was no exception. To ensure a seamless and thrilling journey, we devoted ourselves to readying our trusty BMW K1600GTL and gathering the necessary gear. The thrill of the open road awaited, and we were determined to make every moment count.

Service and Upgrades

First and foremost, we knew our BMW K1600GTL needed to be in prime condition to conquer the miles ahead. With utmost care, we took it to Euro Cycles of Tampa Bay for its annual service work. The skilled technicians gave our motorcycle a thorough check, leaving no bolt unturned. Their attention to detail reassured us that our beloved two-wheeled companion was at its peak performance.

To ensure maximum grip and safety on the road, we invested in brand new Michelin Tires. The Road 6 GT series from Moramotoa of Tampa Bay promised enhanced stability and durability, vital for the diverse terrains that awaited us. With these fresh tires, we were ready to embrace whatever challenges the journey would present.

Extra Storage: Dry Bags for Adventure

Knowing that a 57-day tour demanded a considerable amount of gear, we found inspiration from fellow travelers’ Instagram posts. Two dry bags emerged as the perfect solution to provide extra storage without compromising on style or convenience. We wasted no time in securing these essential companions for the road, confident that they would accommodate all our necessities as we ventured through North America’s magnificent landscapes.

Crafting a Route with Purpose

While we were excited about the spontaneity of the open road, we also recognized the value of a well-thought-out route. Armed with our passion for exploration, we crafted a route that struck a harmonious balance between planned highlights and opportunities for unexpected discoveries.

Certain cities held a magnetic allure, pulling us to visit friends and family along the way. We made sure to include Philadelphia, the historical gem; Washington DC, the nation’s captivating capital; Seattle, a vibrant metropolis; and Oregon’s charming towns of Salem, Bend, and Roseburg. The promise of reunions and shared moments of joy with loved ones enriched our itinerary, giving the journey a deeper sense of purpose.

Embracing Flexibility

With a mapped-out route and essential gear in place, we also embraced the notion of spontaneity. We knew that the allure of the road would lead us to venture off-course occasionally. Whether it was a hidden gem, an inviting detour, or the chance to immerse ourselves in an unfamiliar culture, we were open to embracing the unexpected.

Anticipation and Excitement

As the day of departure drew near, a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement filled the air. The preparation was not just about the physical aspects of the journey, but also about readying our hearts and minds for the transformation that awaited us. Each day leading up to our June 1st departure was a countdown to an experience that would shape our lives in ways we could only begin to fathom.

With the BMW K1600GTL primed for adventure, the dry bags packed with essentials, and a route designed to weave unforgettable moments, we were more than ready to embark on a journey that would leave an indelible mark on our souls.

Journey Through Time: Rediscovering Bend, Oregon’s High Desert

Leaving Salem behind, our next destination held a special place in my heart—the high desert gem of Bend, Oregon, where I had once called home from 1996 to 1999. Embarking on Highway 22, our path paralleled the meandering Santiam River. But what we encountered on this route was both haunting and humbling—the aftermath of devastating forest fires that had ravaged the landscape, leaving it bare and exposed. The once lush and thriving forests had succumbed to the flames, reminding us of the fragility of nature.

As we ventured over the summits of the Cascade mountains, we were greeted by the breathtaking sight of Mt. Washington, the Three Sisters, and Broken Top Mountain. With each mile, the air grew hotter and drier, signaling our arrival in Central Oregon’s high desert. In search of the beauty that had enchanted me during my time in Bend, I took Julia on an enchanting ride around Mt. Bachelor, following the enchanting Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway—a route accessible only during the summer months.

The scenery that unfolded before us was nothing short of mesmerizing—endless lakes, lush forests, and the enchanting allure of the high desert landscape. The grandeur of nature embraced us, and the captivating vistas reminded us of the indomitable spirit of this picturesque region.

As the day came to a close, we ascended to the crown jewel of Bend, Pilot Butte, eager to witness the majestic views of the Cascade mountains in all their splendor. From this vantage point, we marveled at the grand tapestry of Central Oregon, a realm where the stark contrast between dense forests and arid desert created a harmonious symphony of natural wonders.

Our journey through Bend was not just a trip down memory lane; it was a rediscovery of a place that had left an indelible mark on my past and an enchanting impression on Julia’s heart. The high desert’s allure and the enduring beauty of the Cascade mountains remained etched in our minds as we continued our journey, cherishing the memories of a place where time seemed to stand still.

Crater Lake’s Majestic Marvel and a Homecoming in Roseburg, Oregon

Leaving behind the warm embrace of my aunt’s home in Redmond, Oregon, our journey led us south on Highway 97, drawn towards one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles—Crater Lake. This former mountain, whose eruption dates back thousands of years, had transformed into a colossal crater now brimming with shimmering cerulean waters. Words could hardly do justice to the grandeur of this natural wonder; it was an experience that could only be comprehended with one’s own eyes. The sight of Crater Lake left us spellbound, as we gazed in wonder at the magnitude of this geological masterpiece.

Continuing our expedition along Highway 138, we followed the meandering path of the North Umpqua River, a journey that would eventually lead us to Roseburg—the city where my roots were firmly planted. The nostalgia was palpable as we rolled into town, retracing the footsteps of my youth and the cherished memories of my upbringing. The prospect of reconnecting with my father and old high school friends infused the air with excitement and anticipation.

In Roseburg, we were welcomed with open arms by familiar faces and the comforting embrace of old friendships. We reminisced about the adventures of our youth and the shared experiences that had shaped our lives. As we caught up with each other’s journeys, we realized how time had sculpted us into the individuals we had become. The warmth of these reunions reminded us of the enduring power of cherished bonds and the profound sense of belonging that home invokes.

“Traversing Vast Horizons: Across the Oregon Desert to Idaho”

Our journey pressed on, and ahead of us lay the vast expanse of the Oregon desert, a terrain that seemed to stretch to the horizon. With time slipping through our fingers, we knew that longer and more demanding days were necessary to keep our schedule on track for the return to Tampa.

As we ventured through the Oregon desert, we were met with a beauty that was both stark and enchanting. The landscape took on an otherworldly quality, evoking images of distant planets and unexplored realms. The arid wilderness seemed to extend into infinity, captivating our senses with its raw allure.

Amidst the desert’s barrenness, we discovered an unexpected splendor—the subtle colors and shifting textures of the land revealed a unique charm. Each turn of the road brought new perspectives, as the desert’s seemingly desolate canvas was painted with an artistic touch, showcasing nature’s remarkable adaptability.

As the miles passed under our wheels, we found solace in the vastness of the desert, allowing ourselves to be enveloped in its grandeur. The sense of solitude and introspection that the desert evoked invited moments of profound reflection and appreciation for the journey we had undertaken.

With each hour diligent progress, we inched closer to Idaho, where new landscapes and experiences awaited us. The promise of fresh discoveries motivated us to push forward, embracing the challenges of the road with determination and a thirst for exploration.

As we set foot in this enchanting region, it was my first time experiencing its splendor, and I was left in awe of the majestic views that unfolded before us. The grandeur of the Teton mountains loomed over us, standing as towering sentinels of nature’s magnificence. Yellowstone National Park, a true wonder of the world, greeted us with its geysers, hot springs, and vibrant landscapes, each scene more remarkable than the last.

However, our first full day in Jackson Hole did not come without its challenges. We embarked on a frantic search for our motorcycle key, which had somehow found its way into the depths of Julia’s back pocket, concealed among clothes. The three-hour search tested our patience, but once the key was recovered, we rushed to the national parks to immerse ourselves in the splendor that awaited.

The sights of wonder that greeted us were nothing short of mesmerizing. The grace of nature, untouched and unfathomable, reminded us of the remarkable beauty that surrounds us. From the powerful geysers of Yellowstone to the serene vistas of the Teton mountains, each moment was a testament to the enduring allure of the natural world.

In Jackson Hole, we were not only reunited with the memories of Julia’s past but also encountered an experience of profound significance—a journey that allowed us to revel in the wonders of nature and the joy of exploration.

Endurance and Discovery: The Final Stretch of our Motorcycle Adventure

As the days stretched on, the heat and the miles took their toll on our spirits, but we were determined to preserve the sense of discovery and adventure that had fueled us throughout the journey. Our path led us south from Wyoming to Colorado, where we made a meaningful stop at Dinosaur National Monument, marveling at the ancient bones that spoke of a distant past. Our endurance was further tested as we braved the famous Million Dollar Highway in Colorado, flanked by steep cliffs and rugged canyons—a testament to the beauty that surrounded us.

The relentless heat persisted as we journeyed through Colorado and into Texas, where temperatures soared to a scorching 110 degrees. Yet, the allure of the open road and the promise of new experiences spurred us onward. We took respite with my aunt, savoring moments of familial connection amidst the challenges of the road.

As we ventured into the American South, the humidity welcomed us, accompanied by slightly cooler temperatures of 98 degrees. These final days were about pushing through, passing through open spaces and familiar landscapes, inching closer to Tampa with each mile. The anticipation of being back in the familiar embrace of home fueled our determination.

A thunderstorm greeted us just before entering Florida, forcing us to take shelter under an overpass at the state line. The storm mirrored the mix of emotions we felt—relief at returning to familiar territory, yet sadness that the adventure was coming to an end.

Finally, we arrived in Tampa—a bittersweet moment, knowing that new adventures awaited us in Miami as we began a new chapter of teaching. The motorcycle journey had come to a close, but the memories of the road, the breathtaking sights, and the sense of freedom would forever linger in our hearts, guiding us toward the horizon of new possibilities.
